BOOK I: THE PUCELLE PLOT



There are some certainties in life.

One is that, wheresoever a group of men gather, somewhere else will be assembled a second faction plotting the downfall of the first.

Another is that, whenever one party labels a woman a pucelle – a maid, a virgin – the other will at once libel her as a whore.

A third is that, while the first company find such a woman unblemished and holy, the other will desire her ruination and declaim her a witch.

These things are certainties, inexorable as rents…and death.


BOOK II: CONSPIRACY DE RAIS





I know what you did.

You plotted. You schemed. You stole his good name, his freedom, his life.

Though he died bravely, the taint of evil with which you besmirched him – sorcerer, sodomite, rapist, murderer, monster – remains.

I come to remove that stain.

Earthly treasures captivate earthly eyes, and so, inevitably, did his. Such eyes as these are less trained on Heaven than they should be. Behind such eyes, the busily working minds of the venal, the greedy.

And the union of greed and wealth spawns evil…

Perhaps, she would instead have died somewhere on her native steppes, unremembered. Such a death – our loss, as well as that of Penthesilea and her people – would have been sad, indeed. Her name would have then been forever lost to time and anonymity. That ancient name conveyed some connotation of sadness:  penthos  meant “sorrow” in Ancient Greek. POSEIDON AND DEMETER: HAPPY COUPLE, OR VIOLATOR AND VICTIM?

In Demeter’s case, the rapist was the god of earthquakes, water, and horses, as well as the Underworld: Poseidon. I chose to use Bernini’s  The Rape of Proserpine  as the illustration of this post because I felt it vividly depicted the shock and horror of this ancient outrage. The two stories might have been a “twinning”, i.e.: Persephone’s later rape by Hades may just possibly have been a retelling of the original violation of Demeter by Poseidon.
